March 27st, 2017

Do you have an entrepreneurial mindset? Have you ever wanted to know what it was like to run a company? Perhaps you have a specific skillset or interest, like communication or finance, that you’ve been wanting to make use of in a real-world environment. Virtual Enterprises International, or VEI, does just that.

What is Virtual Enterprises International?

VEI is unique class where students work together to run a virtual, but very real, business. Through VEI, your class can choose to start a business in any industry and have students placed in departments that suit them best (Accounting, Marketing, Sales, Human Resources, IT, etc) with leadership positions like a CEO available. The VEI curriculum mimics an actual company extently. As a part of the class, students go through an interviewing process, develop a fully fledged business plan for their company, sell their products at trade shows, and so on.

Why should I take VEI?

If you answered yes to any of the questions from the beginning of this post, you should absolutely take VEI. VEI puts a great emphasis on college and career readiness, while giving you a competitive edge through project-based, collaborative learning. Through VEI, you will 21st century skills in entrepreneurship, global business, problem solving, communication, personal finance, and even technology. This class is not only suitable for those interested in business, but those interested in having a career at all. VEI teaches students four fundamental topics needed for success in any career:

  1. Ownership: Taking responsibility for their own learning
  2. Experiential: Learning in an authentic and realistic manner
  3. Cooperative: Learning with and from others and understanding the dynamics of working as part of a team.
  4. Reflective: Experiencing the consequences of decisions and applying that learning to future challenges

These are areas that will impress any workplace and key to gain promotions, if not executive level positions. Gaining experience and skills in these areas while still in high schools puts you at an unbelievable advantage over your peers and even students in college. VEI is perhaps the most influential internship you can attain as a high school student.

What if I don’t have VEI at my high school?

VEI is definitely a very unique class, so it’s possible that your high school does not yet offer it. If that’s the case, visit VEI’s website and check out their inquiry page to get the ball rolling and to establish VEI at your school!
